This beautiful abalone shell is traditionally used to burn Palo Santo, also known as holy wood for the purpose of smudging. Palo Santo is the Spanish name for the Bursera graveolens tree that is native to Mexico and South America. The tree is widely used for folk medicine and is is claimed that when burned it helps to cleanse bad energies and bring good luck.

To use these sticks as incense or to smudge, hold a piece slightly upside down and light the tip until there is a small flame. After around 1 minute, blow out the flame so only smoke is produced and them place in a fireproof bowl, blowing gently on the embers when required.

It can also be used with smudge sticks made from sage. The shell should not be left unattended whilst anything inside is burning.

Sage has been traditionally used in native nations in North America for generations. It can be used as incense or for smudging which is a practice of clearing negative spiritual energy and restoring or mainting energy purity. This sage is salvia apiana and is sourced in California from a sustainable supplier.

Salt can be placed in the base to snuff the palo/sage into at the end of the ritual.
